Overview

"The final piece is truly a collaboration between my hands and the elements. I am not the producer on my own."

Cécile Mestelan deals in joy. Born in Biarritz and now based in Lisbon, her colourful ceramics reflect the sunny, seaside surroundings that have shaped her aesthetic. As a child, Cécile was captivated by the sense of freedom encapsulated in her parent's workshop - a creative, tactile space in which they produced swimwear - and she felt similarly drawn to a life working with her hands.

After studying fine art in Biarritz and receiving her Masters from the Ecole cantonale d'art de Lausanne in Switzerland, Cécile completed a residency at Vista Alegre, where she studied ceramics under the watchful eye of highly skilled artisans. It was here that she began bringing shapes to life in clay and produced her first porcelain works.

Since then, Cécile's craft has evolved to become a deeply elemental process, governed as much by the whims and caprices of fire, water, air and clay, as by her own judgement. Rather than pursuing uniformity, her practice places sustainability at its heart, embracing the natural impurities and beautiful imperfections inherent to working with clay and celebrating the unique forms that take shape in the kiln. No two pieces of Cécile's work are the same, but each and every one offers a moment of unbridled joy to your everyday.
