Overview
"The movement clay allows lends itself so perfectly to the addition of light. I love the way the light dances over the lamp bases, creating shadows and texture."
Legato's sylvan collection of handcrafted lighting conjures the vast rolling landscapes and textured gardens of the Wiltshire countryside where the studio's founder grew up. Following stints at House & Garden, World of Interiors and TAT London, Matilda Sturley found herself irresistibly drawn to the sculptural potential of clay.
In 2022, she launched her first collection, each design meticulously handcrafted to capture nature's undulations and imperfections, before being moulded in cast composite or ceramic and finished with antiqued brass hardware. The following year, Matilda collaborated with Nicky Haslem to create a design for Chelsea Harbour Design Centre's Wow!house and today she works from her studio in a Georgian townhouse in South London.
The genius of Matilda's approach is in the seamless fusion of the fine and the applied arts. Integrated lighting plays across sculpted surfaces, casting shadows and creating dramatic contrasts that emphasise the dynamism of these elegant forms. Fluid lines and a clean finish mean Matilda's work fits seamlessly into modern and traditional interiors alike. Neither mere lamp nor sculpture, Legato lighting offers even more than the sum of its parts.
