Chausey brings together beautiful objects for the home, crafted by hand in small quantities, and with respect for both people and the environment. Each season we will bring you an edit of new works by our favourite designers and makers, as well as expanding our own Chausey collection of hand-printed textiles.
We are as interested in the artisans behind the pieces as the pieces themselves, in telling their stories and in protecting and promoting craft skills both in the UK and internationally. Our blog - Thoughts - will introduce readers to our partner designers and makers, celebrating some of the most exciting new talent in contemporary craft and well as exploring themes that are inspiring our own creative practice.
Chausey is founded on an ethos of kind, conscious consumerism. In the words of Glenn Adamson, we believe in buying FEWER, BETTER THINGS. Everything in our edit is made by hand especially for you.Great craftsmanship takes time but as the adage goes, good things come to those who wait! Pieces are then carefully packed in our Wales HQ and sent to your door where we hope they'll bring you joy for a lifetime.
Delving into the minutiae of a favourite artist's domestic world, discovering what nurtured them and informed their creative life, is the source of endless fascination. As a curator and an interior designer, we can perhaps claim some professional curiosity, but ultimately it is our love of an artist's work, which makes these glimpses into their private lives and personal spaces so thrilling.
So often, this journey of exploration leads us back to the garden and the perennial draw of our ever-changing natural environment. Hence, the notion of the artist's garden became a focus for our own practice. How a garden has been designed and tended, and how that garden works in synergy with the artist's home both as a place of work and relaxation, of creativity and sanctuary, offers boundless inspiration.
What makes a design 'classic'? For us, it's a piece that is timeless in its design, meticulous in its execution and in some magic, intangible way, strikes a chord.
The bountiful, unglazed form of Legato's Patience lamp beautifully exemplifies this winning triptych, marrying a sculptural minimalism that feels entirely modern, with a fluidity and refinement that conjures eighteenth-century opulence. Like centuries of artisans, designer Matilda Sturley draws on that most timeless of sources for inspiration: the natural world, and in it finds both a sense of majesty and the vernacular that make this piece our first Future Classic.
